Freedom Kantha Quilts: Saribari

A reader told me about these Kantha Quilts from Saribari and I can't stop thinking about them. They are special because not only are they hand stitched from 5 layers of recycled saris, but they are also made by Indian women who have come to Saribari as a refuge from the sex trade industry. And I have to say, I've posted on Kantha Quilts before and I'm always on the look out for great ones, and these are gorgeous, and well priced. On top that, the sari quilt that you pick out comes with a story about the woman whose freedom you helped support. These are one of kind in many ways!

Oh look... it's Karrie's Color of the Year!

Hello Kelly Green!

Check out their website. They have so much to see-- scarves, pillows, table runners, bags! I'm dying for a scarf for a little style on the go. Great products supporting a great cause.

  7. just now getting back in the groove of things after our long trip. :) we did go, and it was WONDERFUL. we couldn't take pictures (not allowed because of the nature of their work), but i seriously loved it.

the women are hilarious, sweet, funny and very hardworking. they bring their kids to work sometimes, and on the day we visited there were 3 little boys running around having a nerf gun war. we sat and had bengali ginger cha and biscuits and listened to one of the american women volunteering there talk about where the women come from, the nature of the sex trade and how women get caught up in it, and got to observe the women stitching blankets. as i don't speak bangla, i couldn't speak with them, but i loved the visit anyway!

i did post a bit about our time in calcutta, but sorry about the no saribari photos!

  9. to kandyce-- thanks so much for the update! i got a chance to look over your last posts-- such magic! funny that the boys were playing nerf guns, just like the boys in the states. and i love to hear that there is humor-- that it's not so serious, and there is laughter. thanks for commenting!

  10. karrie- of course! (again, sorry for taking so long to respond.) they actually just offered a chance to quilt sari fabrics into a quilt of the size and color of the quilter's choice. i, of course, jumped on that bandwagon as quickly as i could. thanks for blogging about SB- i love them so much!
